چکیده

Using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, this study assesses environmental sustainability of two packaging alternatives for extra virgin olive oil: glass bottle and PET produced with 100% recycled granulate. Six scenarios were compared varying on type system distribution phase (in terms country logistics). The life cycle impacts estimated ReCiPe 2018 H evaluation method, using both midpoint endpoint approaches. findings highlighted higher to all impact categories considered, but especially in global warming potential, particulate formation, terrestrial acidification, fossil fuel scarcity which R-PET lower than 40% those system. In warming, was responsible 790–1137 kg CO2 eq. function destination considered); while system, same conditions, showed 459–634 This is mainly due high weight that affected production phases. mode transport phases highlighting how ship more sustainable truck transport, even when considering greater distances. LCA results can help consumers make informed choices a view sustainability, as well disprove prejudices often have towards alternatives.

Glass vs. Plastic: Life Cycle Assessment of Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Bottles across Global Supply Chains

The environmental impacts of global food supply chains are growing with the need for their measurement and management. This paper explores the operations of a global supply chain for extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) according to a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The LCA assessment methodology is applied to determine the environmental impact categories associated with the bottled EVOO life...

Extra virgin olive oil and oleic acid

For many decades, researchers have investigated the relationships between health status and consumption of extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil (and oleic acid) is considered important for the prevention of coronary heart disease. While the biomolecular aspects involving G protein need further research, oleic acid levels in platelets may be a discriminating factor, together with linol...

Life Cycle Inventory of HDPE Bottle-Based Liquid Milk Packaging Systems

This study aims at providing a relatively straightforward methodology to serve as a decision-making tool when more than one packaging solution could be available to a user. It involves a life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis and comparison of three currently available 3.79 l (1 gallon) packaging systems for liquid milk. Two of the primary container types studied use reusable plastic crates (RPCs)...
